| Gas Prices Fuel Bike, Motorcycle Sales Posted: 11 Mar 2011 06:21 PM PST GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- At the gas pump, the damage to your wallet is getting worse with each passing day. At some gas stations, the price for a gallon went up 10 cents overnight.A lot of people can't get by without filling up, but other have had enough. They are already trading their four wheels in for two.A couple of weeks ago it was the dreaded three dollar mark that many were fearing, but now the reality of four dollar a gallon gas is right around the corner."I don't want to pay for gas, it's so expensive," Hunter Lee said after jumping off of his longboard. "I think it's what? $3.50 now?"In Grand Junction, you could find gas Friday morning for as low as $3.26 per gallon. "I look all the time, I know where the cheapest gas is because that's where I go," Rick LeFebre said. You can blame the price hike on Mother Nature or the issues in the Middle East, but whatever the reason is, most people aren't buying it. "From what I know, it's just a fear factor," William Near said. "There is no evidence of why it should be going up."But, learning from years past, more and more people aren't waiting to see where gas prices top out at. They are already moving off of the streets and onto the sidewalks. Whether is biking, skateboarding, or the old-fashioned walking, these people are avoiding gas stations at all costs."I'll give it another 50 cents and [then] more people will change their ways," LeFebre said.At The Bike Shop near Mesa State College, customers are coming and going more than ever. "We've sold a few because of gas prices," Part-Owner Bryan Miick said. "As the price for gas goes up, more people are getting those bikes out of the garage."Soon, it could be tougher to get a spot on the bike rack than in most parking lots. "A penny saved is a penny earned," Near said. For the people who commute longer distances, there are other options to save you money and gas. "I get five to ten people a day coming here, shopping and asking questions," Steve Martin, owner of Motorcycles Accessories on Main Street said.As bad as gas prices are, they are actually leading to better motorcycle and scooter sales for him. "It's actually really good business."Martin says his shop actually ran out of bikes and scooters two years ago when gas prices were above $4.00 per gallon. He says if you're in the market, you better get yours soon. For a complete listing of gas prices in the area, you can head to our homepage. Copyright 2010 KJCT. All rights reserved.
